Part-Time Employees A Hidden Weapon of Efficiency

Part-Time Employees A Hidden Weapon of EfficiencyPart-Time Employees A Hidden Weapon of EfficiencyMany of the reasons for hiring part-time employees are monetary. They work fewer hours, and they cost your company less. Depending on how many hours they work, they may not be eligible for benefits, which is another source of savings. But what are the benefits of hiring part-time employees, and what do you need to look out for? The Motivation to Work Part-time Many people chose to work part-time for personal reasons. There are children or loved ones at home to care for. They want to pursue a passion. They need the extra income. Whatever it is, those seeking part-time work have consciously made the choice to find balance in their lives and have considered how much of their time they are willing to give in order to get it. We interviewed three part-timers to find out mora Marie, a creative lead on a global marketing team at a large technology company, worked with her manager to create a pa rt-time role after Marie gave birth to twins. Joe, a sales program manager at a data management company, is seeking to transition his role to part-time in order to pursue his passion- his own start-up. Rachel, a life science technician at a large research university, specifically looked for part-time jobs after the birth of her second child. Part-Time Workers Think Efficiently Because their time on the job is more limited than full-time workers, the part-timers who transitioned from full-time are particularly sensitive to how much they can get done in the hours they are there. I think about work differently now, Marie said. Im much more efficient with my time, and I actually get more work done. Joe, who hasnt yet transitioned but is in the process of working out an agreement with his manager, said, My manager and I are taking the long-term initiatives and breaking them down to sets of accomplishments towards an end goal. He sees this prioritization as win-win. My manager is prioriti zing the tasks/projects that most suit my skill sets and interests, he says, and it will allow me to feel in more control of how I use my time. Part-Time Workers Enjoy Their Work Workers whose off-time pursuits are different from their professional pursuits report enjoying work more. My work days are my me time where I get a break from kids and get to focus on what interests me, Rachel said. I love that I get to use my brain at work, Marie said. I really enjoy the interaction with people. Now I look forward to Mondays, but by the end of the day I miss the babies. For many college-educated professional women, the world of diapers and preschool toys lacks the intellectual stimulation they were accustomed to on the job, which makes them appreciate work even more. Part-Timers Respect Boundaries In the world of smartphones and always-on email, its easy to get overwhelmed. Part-timers in many professional fields have to make a conscious choice to turn off. An important part of why I want to transition to part-time, Joe said, is more control over how I use my time. Even so, part-time boundaries are an adjustment for those transitioning from full-time. Ive had to learn how to respect my own boundaries, Marie said. I check email only once a day on my off days. Sometimes I need to respond to urgent matters. And sometimes I feel bad about missing meetings on the days Im off. Hiring or Transitioning to Part-Time If your company is hiring part-time employees or has full-timers who are seeking a transition, consider the following Look at their motivation for working part-time. Will their off-time pursuits interfere with their ability to perform on the job, or will it complement it? Break down responsibilities and tasks. Part-time employees, particularly those with a full-time history, want to know how to structure their day. Respect the boundaries they have set. If its a job that requires being on-site, such as a lab technician, boundaries are simple. But boundaries also ex tend to the digital world. Set guidelines for response to emails in the off-hours. As more people seek to find balance between work and passion, and course-correct from the digital communication explosion, dont be surprised to see more requests from full-timers seeking a transition to part-time. Also consider how professional part-time employees could bring your organization the skills it needs at a cost it can afford. Are you the reason youre not finding jobs

Are you the reason youre not finding jobsAre you the reason youre not finding jobs3 ways youre sabotaging your own job search. Youve got your resume together, your cover letter polished, references locked and loaded. Youve been scouring the job boards for hours, days, weeks, maybe even months and still havent found the right fit. If this is your reality, perhaps its time to consider it might be you. Here are three common mistakes that could be the reason the perfect job has yet to come your way.1. Youre targeting the wrong jobs.Keep missing the mark? Maybe youre aiming at the wrong targets. Obvious as it may seem, youll never land a job if youre looking for jobs that are wrong for you. Think hard about what schriftart of positions youre looking for and narrow your search parameters accordingly. When looking at a job, ask yourself if the description fits your experience and skill set. Do you feel capable of performing all the listed tasks? Do you truly have the experience requested i n the requirements? If the answer is no, youre likely wasting time and energy. Nine times out of ten, poor searches yield poor results.Only apply for positions you are qualified for, and try not to be too hard-set on a specific company or position. You may want a big job to write home about with a big Fortune 500 company like Apple or Berkshire Hathaway, but realistically, theres not enough room to accommodate the entire workforce. Instead of putting all your eggs in one basket, try spreading your net wider. Who knows, your dream job could be in a role or with a company you havent heard of yet2. Your resume isnt aligned with your professional goals.Youve led six-figure absatzwirtschaft campaigns and built homes for needy families out of the kindness of your heart. You should be proud, but how does that pertain to your experience as a graphic designer? A resume focused on your goal profession is the critical resource to get your foot in the door for that coveted interview.Your resume should highlight relevant strengths and demonstrate that you have the professional skills and background required to excel in a given position. Did you play a part in making the graphics used in that six-figure marketing campaign? Did you design a room in the home you built for needy families? This is what you should be focusing on. Use strong, concise language to make your resume stand out in the over-saturated crowd. Also, make sure your resume is devoid of any outdated or superfluous information.3. Youre not using your network to its full potential As the old parable goes, its not what you know, but who you know. And this is truer in networking than ever before. According to Forbes, networking is still the best way to find a job in todays career market. That doesnt mean to hit up your extended family and entire high school class begging for work, but its never a bad idea to phone a friend and ask for help.Never undermine the effectiveness of network. If you have a friend or fami ly member with connections to your desired industry, use them as a resource. purple drank on past colleagues for leads to companies of interest. If possible, talk to someone in a similar role and ask about their story (a proud employee will be happy to share). If it worked for them, it could work for you.Last year was Americas best year of job growth since 1999. Great news if your New Years resolution is to find a career you love Now is the time to be proactive. Remember, your job search should be your full-time job. Be open. Be receptive. You never know where youll find your dream job

Director Lands C-Level Job By Tracking Trends

Director Lands C-Level Job By Tracking TrendsDirector Lands C-Level Job By Tracking TrendsDavid White used Ladders and his knowledge of the market to land a CIO location near his home in Wisconsin.David White was under no illusions that his position as director of project management for a large Wisconsin health-insurance provider would be permanent. As a former consultant, 46-year-old White reviewed local and national job boards daily to gauge market conditions and get a feel for career and employment trends. When another project-management job opened up on Ladders with one of the largest HMOs in the area, the OpsLadder member jumped at the opportunity. These director of project management jobs dont open up often, and it was with one of three companies that Id said I would love to work for if a position ever opened up, White said.White, who lives about 20 minutes north of Madison, Wis., signed on for a two-year contract and said he and his team were on track to finish when he realized that he may have done his job a little too well.Wed done so well on this project that I knew it was just a matter of time before they would have to downsize the project team, White said. I knew this was coming - we had about 71 positions that were going to be removed.White took an early out from his contract and after searching the job boards, located and landed a full-time position as a chief information officer with a large public accounting firm in the Madison area.I hooked up with this new CIO position in about 35 days, he said. Even in the midst of the economic crisis that was getting worse in November of last year, I knew that with my skills and my knowledge of trends in the market that Id be able to find something without a problem, he said.An insider advantageWhite said his knowledge of employment trends and other career information definitely gave him an advantage over other job seekers, since it allowed him to set realistic expectations about kompetenz opportunities, sala ries and benefits and the length of time it would take to secure a new position. He said Ladders was an invaluable resource, and that as the number of available jobs decreased, many other employment sites and recruiters would go to great lengths to appeal to job hunters. On every job board I was tracking, I saw that the number of available jobs was dwindling, White said. Another thing I noticed is that often, numerous recruiting firms would post the same position, but word the posting differently so it would look like they had a number of jobs available. He said he realized quickly that if a position went up on Ladders, he could be certain that the position was unique and that the organization was completely serious about finding the right fit to fill that specific role. Many times, youd see a position go up on a job board, and youd interview and follow up only to find that the company had filled the position from within, he said. Many companies are required to post jobs internally firs t, but these kinds of false positions dont really help job seekers.Keeping track of employment trendsIn his current CIO position, White said he still keeps a close eye on online employment sites to help him perform his duties and ensure his new company is doing the best job it can for its employees.I have to understand the stresses that are impacting my employees, how high the demand is for their specific skills, and whether or not were in danger of losing valuable folks because salaries and benefits are better elsewhere.Keeping charts and data from sites like Ladders and constantly reviewing the sites extensive resource library can also help White understand what his company will need to offer when building teams to tackle projects, how long it might take to fill specific positions, and what current pay rates and salaries potential employees can expect, he said. Its really a fantastic human capital forecaster, White said.
